The Center for Sex and Culture and Mark I Chester studio will co-host a ground breaking show, City of Wounded Boys & Sexual Warriors, a 38 year retrospective of the photographs of San Francisco gay radical sex photographer Mark I Chester, during the month of September 2015. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the artist's 65th birthday and the community's annual celebration of leather sexuality at the Folsom St. Fair. A reception for the artist, book launch and birthday celebration will be held on Friday, Sept. 18th at the CSC at 1349 Mission St. The CSC show will cover work from 1977-2001, in mostly fine art black and white silver prints. Doors will open at 6:30pm and Mark will give an talk on his work from 7-8pm. The reception will continue until 10 pm with the book launch of a monograph that accompanies the exhibition. Entrance to the show is limited to adults only. Part 2 of City of Wounded Boys will open on Fri, Sept. 25th at the Mark I Chester studio, at 1229 Folsom St. The work in this part will cover color digital photography between 2000-2015. The reception will go from 7-10pm and can also be viewed Sun. Sept. 27th during the Folsom St. Fair between 11am-6pm. Mark's studio is close to the Folsom/8th St. entrance to the Fair. Mark will also be doing digital pix on demand during the fair. Mark I Chester has created a dark explicit photographic diary that documents his life in San Francisco's sexual underground from the late 1970s to the present. Mark's work captures these tumultuous times, politically, socially and sexually, through personal portraiture that crosses the normally exclusive photographic genres of fine art portraiture, social documentary photography and sexually explicit art. This is an unusually personal, sexual, confrontational, devastating (parts are a response to the AIDS crisis) and full of pleasure that has chronicled the history in San Francisco's gay and leather sexual underground as well as serving as a journal for Chester. City of Wounded Boys & Sexual Warriors is an 8"x10" hardback photographic monograph with over 125 pages and more than 75 images in both black and white and color that go from ecstasy to devastation and everything in between. Self published, digital on demand, the book will sell at the special price of $115 during the show, a savings of $35 from the normal retail price of $150. It features an afterword by well-known San Francisco anthropologist, University of Michigan professor and leather historian Dr. Gayle Rubin.
