Collaborative Performance

Kala Art Institute is pleased to present a collaborative performance event with artist James Sterling Pitt and musician Danny Paul Grody in conjunction with the exhibition, Para-Apparatus, New Work by 2013-2014 Kala Fellows.

In his studio practice, James Sterling Pitt records his experience of a time and place in a drawn sketch, and then converts it to sculpture referring to his personal memory of the experience. Over the course of his fellowship at Kala, Pitt has been working collaboratively with musician Danny Paul Grody. Together, they have recorded sound and image in both natural and constructed locations, including Mineral Springs in Tilden Park and Battery Townsley in the Marin Headlands.

In addition to field recordings, they have documented spontaneous sounds made during Pitt’s process of drawing, painting, and printmaking in his project space at Kala. The recordings they have made over this time have been reworked by each artist, built upon, and folded back into their collaborative work.

This collaborative performance will present the work created by James Sterling Pitt and Danny Paul Grody over the course of their collaboration on June 21, which is also the 2014 summer solstice. The final work from the collaboration will also result in a LP/Print Release by Land and Sea in Late Summer/Fall 2014. Seating for the event has been generously provided by OVERLAP Foundation in San Francisco.

James Sterling Pitt’s sculptures are carved and assembled from sheets of wood, each subtly colorful piece is a concrete rendering of a chosen moment in the life of the artist. Pitt’s process first records his experience of a time and place in a drawn sketch, sometimes created on-site. The resulting wood constructions are realized within a very personal system whose format allows subjectivity and impressions to meld with elements (weather, time of day), sensations (scents and music) and associations of the intellect (literature or historical figures.) James Sterling Pitt is represented by Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco.

Danny Paul Grody is a solo musician and founding member of San Francisco based bands Tarentel, The Drift, and Moholy-Nagy. He is a self-taught guitarist, and the melodies at the core of Danny’s songwriting bring to mind his love of West African kora, Takoma style fingerpicking and all things minimal, repetitive & hypnotic. His first solo album Fountain was released in 2010 on Root Strata followed up by In Search Of Light on Students Of Decay in 2011. He’s contributed tracks to the Three Lobed 2012 record store day LP Eight Trails, One Path as well as to Vol. 5 of the Tompkins Square guitar soli series, Imaginational Anthem. August 20th, 2013 saw the release of his third solo album, Between Two Worlds on the wonderful Three Lobed Recordings.
