Join us for a multi-media conversation with artist and activist Kathy Sloane as she examines questions such as: What is a collection? Why do people chose to collect the works that they do? Whose collections find homes in museums, and whose end up in flea markets or dumps? Kathy Sloane began her professional life as a self taught photographer in San Francisco’s Keystone Korner Jazz Club in 1976, where she was drawn to the music of improvisation, beauty, and resistance as a metaphor for the civil rights struggles of the 1960’s. Since then, she has continued to document communities of music in the San Francisco Bay Area, with an emphasis on the multicultural and multi-ethnic richness of the region. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Jazz Oral History Program, the DeSaisset Museum in Santa Clara, CA, and the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, and were featured in the the Ken Burns’ mini-series “Jazz.” Her work is currently on exhibition in Fleeting Moments, Lasting Sounds (May 1st – June 26th, 2015) at the Omi Gallery. Tickets are $10.
