DOTS & DASHES: Another Morse Code is a two-person exhibition of work by San Francisco natives, Linda Davenport and Richard Wright. Emphasizing the formal rather than the thematic, Davenport and Wright produce work, concurrently but independently of one another, with primary elements composed almost entirely of dots and dashes. DOTS & DASHES: Another Morse Code investigates the idea that art is a universal language. In referencing Morse code, which is a fairly succinct method of transmitting text information not readily lending itself to personal readings, curator Kohler acknowledges that art is also a method to transmit information, but one much more open to interpretation on behalf of the artist and the viewer. Kohler selected Davenport and Wright because while their approaches and materials are quite different, their works share formal characteristics resulting in a curious and compelling contrast. The prevalent dots and dashes in the exhibited artwork function as an alternative mode of conversation with the viewer implying that while Davenport’s and Wright’s works possess superficial similarities to Morse code (as well as each other), it is an ultimately much richer and multi-layered exchange.
