Tyler Wood Gallery is delighted to present new and recent photographs by Eleanor Oakes. In her series titled Residual Loop, Oakes exposes evidence of events that took place at certain times in the past. The photographs record miniature histories that imply narratives. The viewer’s imagination revels in the multiplicity of dirtiness but easily becomes frustrated as there is almost too little to go on.
For Expired [1927], Oakes found an unopened box of sheet film that expired in 1927. In the darkroom she opened the box and printed the film. If the images of Residual Loop are visualizations of absence, the abstractions of Expired [1927] are a visualization of the absence of the artist’s hand and a tribute to the physicality of film.
Eleanor Oakes received her BA in Visual Arts and Art History from Princeton University in 2007 and her MFA from Stanford University in 2014. She was awarded a Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Award in 2013 and the Anita Squires Fowler Award from Stanford in 2014. Oakes lives and works in Detroit.
