Fake Autobiographies: Performance

Please join us for a free, live performance of a new experimental movement duet by Sophia Wang and Brontez Purnell. "Fake Autobiographies: The love story of..." tells the story of an interracial couple who meet during the 1960s eruption of the Civil Rights, Free Speech, and anti-war movements on U.C. Berkeley's campus, and tracks the couple through the aftermath of these years. Movements in the piece are inspired by an excerpt from Mark Kitchell's documentary "Berkeley in the Sixties" that showed student protesters being dragged down university steps by police. The artists were taken "with the actual physical movements" and "the forms of active and passive resistance" expressed by the students' bodies and use this as a starting point for exploring nostalgia, repetition in political organizing, inheritance and alternate histories. This is the culminating performance of the artists' two-week residency at Interface Gallery for Bodily Engagements. Bodily Engagements is an eight-week series that brings performance and visual art practices into relationship through four, dynamic, two-week long projects presented by a talented selection of Bay Area Visual Artists and Performers. 5-7 pm.
