Eleanor Harwood Gallery presents Figure Ground, a four-person exhibition featuring work by Mathew Zefeldt, Samuel Hayes, Niv Bavarsky and Will Reed, curated by Gideon Chase. This will be the gallery’s re-opening show after its fall hiatus with an opening reception on Friday, January 10, 2014 from 5-8 pm.
Figure Ground will feature over twenty works, including new oil paintings by Will Reed, a selection of acrylic paintings by Mathew Zefeldt, mixed media works by Niv Bavarsky, and Samuel Hayes’s airbrush paintings and series of Gundam drawings, selected by Gideon Chase, an Eleanor Harwood Gallery program artist.
A figure/ground relationship is the interaction between the figure (the foreground) and the ground (the background). Whether it’s being used to describe text (the figure) on a piece of paper (the ground), or the person reading (the figure) and their environment (the ground), art needs both a subject and a context in order to have meaning.
Ranging from large acrylic paintings on canvas, to small graphite drawings on printer paper, these four distinct artists create whimsical narratives using bright colors and playful mark making. The paintings embrace their abnormalities and imperfections to explore the figure, humor, and the distortion and manipulation of the world these pictures live in.
