Generation of Oakland: The People’s Portrait Generation of Oakland: The People's Portrait poster by Nia Imara, 2015

Generation of Oakland: The People’s Portrait is a photo shoot and story banking event for Oakland residents to share stories of the impacts of gentrification and displacement on their families. The purpose of the project is to document and preserve Oakland’s legacy of determination and boundless creativity during a time in which development is bringing dramatic change to the city’s neighborhoods. With Generation, Imara is attempting to raise the visibility and voices of East Oakland residents experiencing the changes brought about by rapid development. Community members are encouraged to stop by for food, music and to share their stories with one another. In the months following Generation of Oakland: The People’s Portrait, the portraits and stories will be compiled in a collection for a new website that will illustrate the affects of displacement on communities.
