Grisha Bruskin: Paintings and Sculpture Grisha Bruskin, Nota Bene, oil on linen

Grisha Bruskin is one of the most important and successful contemporary Russian artist. In 1988, six of Bruskin’s paintings sold for more than $1 million, at the Sotheby’s Russian sale in Moscow. Subsequently, Bruskin immigrated to New York and began his successful career in the US. Grisha Bruskin is widely recognized for an oeuvre that deeply engages philosophy, history, and religion. Many of his works relate to the literature of Jewish mysticism and the Kabbalah.

The exhibition this fall at Meyerovich Gallery titled “Grisha Bruskin: Paintings and Sculpture” will feature oil paintings that represent Bruskin’s own world of images and meanings, united by themes from Biblical, mythological, Kabbalistic and folklore traditions. As well as bronze sculpture, painted white, from his On the Edge series, “Moonlight” depicts figures as they balance or step off columns. Metaphorically grounded “on the edge” of walking and sleeping, consciousness and non-consciousness, death and rebirth, the works’ stylized handsomeness conjures associations with romanticism, kitsch, and Socialist realism. Included in this exhibition is a group of sculptures, paintings on canvas and paper that further explore these themes.

Internationally acclaimed artist, Grisha Bruskin, whose art can be seen in many major museums worldwide, such as MoMA in New York, the Museum Ludwig (Cologne), Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, National Gallery of Art in Caracas, Art Institute of Chicago, State Russian Museum, State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, State Tretyakov Gallery, and others. In 2012 he won the prestigious Kandinsky Prize, Art Chronika Foundation, Moscow, Russian.
