Grocery List: Charles Papillo

Charles Papillo

Grocery List

Opening Thursday, October 10th, 6-9PM

The Gallery at 18 Reasons is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Charles Papillo. Grocery List is a dynamic series of portraits Papillo created by taking inspiration from discarded, anonymous grocery lists found in the his Mission District neighborhood.

Papillo makes intricate, sparkling, and textured depictions of the grocery lists’ imagined owners using the lists’ ingredients to color handmade paper surfaces. The crafted and careful layering of the iconic drawings speak to the history of delicate illustrations of religious deities. By using pattern, texture, and color, Papillo creates a sense of history through layering and depth that directly correlates to his layered references of ritual and ceremony, reality and surreality, and balance. These portraits craft open-ended stories that examine our perceptions of archetype, stereotype and subjectivity .

Charles Papillo (b.Boston, MA, 1986) spent his adolescence in Vermont and moved to New York City in 2005 to pursue a BFA from Parsons the New School for Design. He briefly studied at Hellenic International Studies in the Arts in Paros, Greece in 2006 and later travelled to the Galapagos Isles in 2007 to teach art. He has attended numerous artists' residencies in Spain and Costa Rica. Most recently, he was nominated as one of Ten Future Bay Area Art Icons by SF Weekly's 2013 Mastermind Award. This is his first exhibition at 18 Reasons.

We look forward to seeing you for the opening during 18th Hour on Thursday October 10th, from 6-9pm.
