Mia Christopher, A Feeling of Trying Very Hard / (right) Chelsea Wong, Mahabandoola Street Yangon
Legion presents Hello at Last, a two-person exhibition of new work by San Francisco artists Chelsea Wong and Mia Christopher. Hello at Last includes Chelsea Wong’s new paintings inspired by travels to Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar. Wong works primarily in watercolor and gouache on paper, but recently began applying her signature style to hand-built ceramic plates and bowls featuring the monks, market ladies and other colorfully-outfitted individuals encountered on her journeys. Wong’s earlier dimsum-inspired silkscreen prints will also be on view, a nod to Legion’s Chinatown surroundings. Mia Christopher’s new paintings are intimately scaled abstractions of glitter, nail polish and stickers applied to surfaces as diverse as handmade paper, acrylic sheets, granite samples, and other found materials. The work is exploratory and meditative, hinting at the figuration of Christopher’s earlier work. Highly concentrated pigments are brushed, poured and scraped to create fluid, seductive accumulations of contrasting textures and varying luminescence. Hello at Last also features works on paper and painted ceramics that Chelsea and Mia created together especially for this exhibition. In collaborative studio sessions, working alongside one another, the two artists took turns, exchanging and combining their mark-making, resulting in a playful visual record of this dialogue.
Chelsea Wong began her studies at Parsons School of Design (New York, NY), completed her BFA in Printmaking at California College of the Arts in 2010, and was awarded the first ever Hamaguchi Emerging Artist Fellowship at Kala. She had a solo show at Zinc Art in Washington (2015) and also exhibited at Adobe Books, City Limits, Kearny Street Workshop, and Giant Robot (SF, LA, NY). Mia Christopher earned her BFA in Painting from California College of the Arts in 2012 followed by a Brooklyn summer studio residency under the auspices of The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) (2012). She has been exhibited locally and internationally, including a recent solo show at Kitty Hawk Gallery (Sebastopol, CA) in early 2015. Both artists live and work in San Francisco.
