Howard Fried (BFA 1968) has been a major figure in Conceptual art in the Bay Area and SFAI in particular, having founded what is now known as the New Genres department. His works consider ideas surrounding cognitive power processes such as decision making, control, and perceiving information, and the limitations of these processes. Fried works in video, performance, and sculptural installations that are accompanied by complex instructions and explores the workings of systems and follows the path to their eventual and inevitable end. His latest solo exhibition opens September 8, 2016, at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco. Presented in partnership with CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts.
