If All Action Were Music

To the tune of George Brecht, who said, “music isn’t just what you hear or what you listen to, but everything that happens,” artist Chris Kallmyer (AIR ’12) introduces score-making as a methodology for writing prompts that focus intention, expand creative practice, and invite presence and focus to everyday actions and objects.

Join Kallmyer in an orchestration of the Marin Headlands as you write and perform scores, reenact Fluxus events, conduct outdoor sound studies, and discuss the syncopation of studio practice and life. Series takes place over three consecutive Sundays.

Schedule Of Activities Session 1–March 8: Introductions and discussion of concepts, projects ahead, and Kallmyer’s practice. Sound walk of the Headlands with listening and score enactment exercises. Take away prompt for the week.

Session 2–March 15: Share responses to prompts. Discuss contemporary score-based works. Score writing and performing exercises. Take away prompt for the week.

Session 3–March 22: Share responses to prompts. Score writing & performing exercises followed by final discussion on additional resources, references, and directions to take work.

Fieldwork Sessions are inspired by the resources of Headlands’ dynamic artist community, unique site, and the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re a practicing artist looking for deep engagement with your work, a creative thrill-seeker looking to get your hands dirty, or an arts appreciator looking to learn more about the creative process, Fieldwork Sessions (ranging from a one day activity to a three week series) are led by multidisciplinary presenters and are designed to send participants home with the skills, objects, and relationships born of their experience. All Fieldwork Sessions participants must be 18 or older.
