Don Soker Contemporary Art is pleased to present “Japanese Works on Paper of the 1970’s and ‘80’s”. These works, in a variety of mediums, concept in modern Japanese art. reflect the emergence of a new concept in modern Japanese art. Beginning in the mid-1960’s, mostly younger Japanese artists broke away from the traditional styles and techniques of their predecessors and began to experiment with new materials and approaches to their works. The medium of printmaking continued to be dominant, but even there, traditional woodblock was often replaced by silkscreen, etching, lithograph and photo process techniques. Support for the new type of works in Japan was limited but because of the large number of US companies based in Japan during the Vietnam period, many Americans provided the initial encouragement to these artists. The exhibition includes works by over a dozen artists including: Shoichi Ida, Kosuke Kimura, Hiroyuki Kitano, Makoto Kumagai, Akira Masumoto, Takesada Matsutani, Yuzo Nakano, Kenji Nanao, Minoru Nishiki, Tetsuya Noda, Keiji Usami, Hideo Yoshihara, and Yutaka Yoshinaga
