Tyler Wood Gallery is pleased to present new and recent sculptures by JiEun Chun.
Towards the end of my first visit to Chun’s studio I asked her what she thought of Minimalism’s cube. “It’s spiritual,” she said. I laughed as I thought she was going to say something about phenomenology, that is, the movement of a person’s body around sculptures through space and time. Directly descended from Robert Morris’ use of felt and John Chamberlain’s crunching car parts together, Chun’s sculptures have presence but are neither violent nor intimidating. She employs industrial materials such as carpet padding and sheets of aluminum. “It seems that you’ve exploded the minimalist cube,” I replied.
Chun puts the pieces back together to form diagrammatic sculptures. She uses folding, layering, sewing and creating/ filling/ covering holes, that is, negative space.
Maybe it’s not that Chun is piecing together the spiritual qualities of Minimalism. Perhaps she is creating molecular reflections of that spirituality.
JiEun Chun was born in Seoul, Korea in 1985. She received her BFA in painting and printmaking from Ewha Womans University in Seoul and her MFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
