Tyler Wood Gallery is pleased to present new work by John Dante Bianchi. Throughout his career Bianchi builds a structure to form a body and covers it with a skin. He then takes away from the skin to show the relationship between the surface and its support. Mathematically this can be described as n-1. Each painting and sculpture is a mapping of how specific materials such as wood panel, aluminum and EPS foam, form a body. This index of the structural support is made possible only by removing and exposing layers of paint and the lines and colors created by their strata. In terms of a human element n-1 is pain that makes way for expansion. By bruising, by hurting, and by subtracting a person can map his body, mind, and emotions through regeneration and self-reflection. Bianchi creates the ‘bruised panels’ with sheets of aluminum in sections on wood panels as if they were skeletons. He layers paint on top like skin. Colors that reference bruises are built up the same way the body presents them. Bianchi sands down and builds up the surfaces to reveal and conceal the different layers, responding to the colors and compositions that emerge. The large sculptures are carved from EPS foam and coated with aqua resin, plaster, pigment and redwood. The surfaces are similar to those of the paintings in that the layers are sanded down to reveal previous layers. They resemble organic and geologic forms caught between entropy and growth. Bianchi received an MFA from Yale University and BFA from Cooper Union. He has had one-person exhibitions at Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York; Signal Gallery, Brooklyn; and Primetime, Brooklyn. He has been included in group exhibitions at Galerie Derouillon, Paris; David Zwirner, New York; James Fuentes, New York; and Night Gallery, Los Angeles. Bianchi lives and works in New York.
