Legion presents This, That, and Hours in the Sun, a two-person show featuring Bay Area artists Leah Rosenberg and Carissa Potter Carlson. For the month of April, Leah Rosenberg and Carissa Potter Carlson vowed to absorb the sun for three mornings each week. In their respective spaces, in their own ways, both artists ritualistically spent time in the sun, generating work around the prescription of sunlight. The recordings, findings and artworks evolving from this time make up the exhibition at Legion, opening May 20 and on view through June 24, 2016.

Spanning painting, sculpture, installation and food, Leah Rosenberg’s work explores how color, form, flavor and arrangements affect human emotion. Using a process of accrual and layers, Leah’s works personify how our experience and memories accumulate, creating pieces with a vivid variety of color and texture. Leah moved to San Francisco from Canada to pursue her MFA at the California College of Art, where she wrote her thesis on the artistic possibilities of cake. Leah worked as the lead pastry chef for the rooftop bar at SFMOMA where she applied her love of art, artists and cake-making to dream up desserts celebrating the museum’s collection. Leah is currently a Fellow at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.

Originally from Minneapolis, Carissa Potter Carlson lives and works in Oakland, California. Her prints and small-scale objects reflect her hopeless romanticism through their investigations into public and private intimacy. Speaking both humorously and poignantly to the human condition, Carissa's work touches chords we can all relate to. Carissa received her MFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2010. She is a founding member of Colpa Press and founder of People I’ve Loved. Since 2010, Carissa has been an artist in residence at Kala Art Institute, where she teaches letterpress. She also serves as a mentor in Southern Exposure’s One-on-One Mentorship Program. Her first book, I like you, I love you, will be released in 2016 (Chronicle Books). Carissa will also be an artist in residence at Facebook headquarters in 2016. This, That, and Hours in the Sun is part of a series curated by Alice Wu for Legion.

Legion’s 2016 programming, supported by an Alternative Exposure Grant, explores the intersection of art, commerce and design, and Chinatown, where Legion calls home. Legion is a contemporary lifestyle boutique representing independent designers, some local and exclusive to the area, including Kowtow, Ilana Kohn, Seek Collective, Cold Picnic, Ali Golden, and Ben Medansky. Founded by Bay Area native and fashion writer Sydney Pfaff, Legion also stocks a selection of home design, paper goods, and books. This, That, and Hours in the Sun is on view May 20 through June 24, 2016 at Legion, 678 Commercial Street, San Francisco, CA 94111.
