Paulson Bott Press is pleased to present the first exhibition of Thornton Dial’s drawings on the west coast, Life in the Shade: Drawings by Thornton Dial. This exhibition features a selection Dial’s lyrical drawing spanning two decades. Dial’s linear drawings of women entwined with symbolic renderings of nature; birds, eggs, nests, fish and tigers point to the familiar social and political themes represented in his other works.
Thornton Dial’s artwork has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions including most recently the retrospective Hard Truths: the Art of Thornton Dial, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta (2012), Indianapolis Museum of Art (2013), and the National Academy Museum, New York (2013), The New Museum of American Art, New York (1993), The American Folk Art Museum, New York (1993), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2005). His work was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2000.
