The Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley invites you to Living Time: Art and Life After 'Art-Into-Life'. Hosted to coincide with the UC Berkeley Art Museum’s spring exhibition The Possible, this gathering brings together artists, curators, and scholars from a variety of art fields and regions of the world to think about the connections between and boundaries separating "art" and "life." How has this relationship changed over the course of the 20th century--from Constructivism to Happenings to our contemporary moment? What is "Life" in today's bio-political sphere? What happens when the freedoms and interventions of art-into-life experiments are absorbed in a contemporary "experience economy"? How do different histories of governance--socialist, liberal democratic, neoliberal, communist--affect the place and character of time-based art? How do different art forms respond when life is lived under conditions of austerity? And how might a cross-arts gathering on such questions open us to new avenues of possibility and coalition-building?
