Fourteen artists, recognized for their significance in shaping major genres within contemporary art, are brought together in an expanded definition of social discourse. The artists are akin for their amplified voices and commentaries that are often formed through their highly individualistic choices in lifestyle and/or professional trajectories. In keeping with the theme, the exhibition comprises of new paintings created on a grand scale, giving an enveloping experience of each artist’s work. Over the years, many of these artists have fully refined their practice and have established a signature vernacular. Even so, each artist continues to progress and often reinvents his or her practice, never becoming too comfortable or formulaic in art or life.

For these artists, an unrelenting quest to transcend their practices and prior successes often leads to a divergent life path that resides outside of the box. According to artist and curator Andrew Schoultz, this spirit and resulting art is where social discourse lays. Schoultz’s intention for Major Work is to identify artists within his peer group whose work is informed by their journey existing outside of the “norm”. He views social discourse as an important element in art, yet finds that it is often absent in much of the work presented today.

While each artist is recognized for his or her own distinctive voice, these differences lead them into various investigations and explorations on such topics as: politics, pop culture, advancing technology, environmental issues and capitalism. Schoultz threads these acute vantage points together, resulting in a dynamic exchange of dialogue between the artists and artwork. Additionally, creating in extreme scale unifies the body of work, offering an immersive interaction for the viewers amid the exhibition space and art.

Major Work features the work of prominent and established artists, many of whom have exhibited at esteemed venues including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and San Jose Museum of Art. Participating artists are: Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble, Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall (Dalek), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca, Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup, Eric White, Allison Schulnik and Andrew Schoultz.
