Making Special

artists transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary

Santa Rosa Junior Collegewill present an art exhibit entitled Making Special, from November 13 to December 12, 2013, in the Robert F. Agrella Gallery, on the Santa Rosa campus, 1501 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA.

Exhibiting artists are Gyongy Laky, Mari Andrews, Elisabeth Higgins O'Connor, Clint Imboden, Sandra Ono, and Esther Traugot. Like many artists working today, they share an attraction to humble and discarded materials - wire, pruned twigs and branches, thread stones, spent clothing and hacksaw blades, etc. But the deftness and expressive range employed here endow the resulting objects and installations with surprising beauty, meaning, and poignancy.

Curator Gina Telcocci sees these artists as exemplifying a concept writer Ellen Dissanayake calls "making special". This concept looks at art as a behavior rather than as product, a behavior that serves societies in complex and critical ways. While drawing on history, abstraction, and craftsmanship, as well as universal and cultural symbols, these artists are attending rigorously to their personal visions. Their art-making, and what they offer to the world are vital parts of the continuum of that human impulse to "make special".
