Caldwell Snyder Gallery presents its third exhibition of paintings by Bay Area native, Matt Rogers. In this body of work, Rogers highlights a breadth of styles from his diverse artistic oeuvre including landscapes, cityscapes, and abstracted horses. From moody black and white abstracts to vibrant graphic landscapes, this exhibition celebrates the range of talents from an artist immersed in the rich tradition of California painting. In true California style, Matt Rogers’ paintings engage both landscape and Pop art, often creating an uncanny synergy between the two. In Rogers’ most recent work, we can sense the artist’s deep understanding of California’s complicated, dark, bright beauty. As a lifelong resident, he knows firsthand that California’s landscape is as precarious as it is idyllic--prone to devastation in the form of earthquakes, fires, and mudslides. It is a place where utopia coexists with dystopia, and beach culture rubs shoulders with counterculture--a paradox that infuses much of his unique work. The lineage of California landscape painting that he engages here includes Elmer Bischoff, Richard Diebenkorn, and David Park— but first and foremost, Wayne Thiebaud, with whom Rogers has maintained a close relationship. From Thiebaud, he has learned to continually ask questions of his work, weighing each painting’s entrances and exits, the mechanics of the picture, and the temperature and volume of its colors. Born in Oakland, Rogers studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and lives and works in St. Helena, California. He has shown his paintings in solo and group exhibitions in California and beyond.
