Mind Traveling: Ink Art of Lu Chuntao

The Chinese Culture Foundation’s Visual Art Center presents Shanghai based artist Lu Chuntao (陆春涛), Mind Traveling: Ink Art of Lu Chuntao (臥遊:陸春濤的水墨藝術), as the first exhibition of the year to celebrate CCF’s 50th anniversary. Curated by University of California, San Diego professor of Asian Art History Kuiyi Shen for the Episode series.

Professor Shen was invited to guest curate the exhibition under the Visual Art Center’s Episode series, which opens the exhibition space to visiting artists and curators showcasing diverse views of Chinese culture and art. The exhibition of nearly 30 works featuring new ink on handmade paper paintings, in addition to several past works representative of Lu’s distinctive style, is the first in a series of activities celebrating the Chinese Culture Foundation’s 50 year anniversary and annual Spring Festival. The exhibition also launches the Visual Art Center’s 2015 program series, Without Walls, aimed at engaging the broader community in the arts, both at the Center and in public spaces. The Visual Art Center (750 Kearny Street, 3rd Floor) will host an opening reception for the artist on March 7th, from 1:00-3:00 PM.

“Mind traveling” is a term in Chinese art history that describes experiencing the same awe and reverence one feels in traveling to a new place by gazing at a landscape painting. The concept is deeply rooted in an ancient spiritual belief of one’s ability to access separate, or dual realms through the contemplation or creation of art. Lu’s work draws on the rich history of mind traveling by creating work that transports the viewer into new aesthetic environments. Dr. Shen elaborates on this, writing:

It seems that the artist manages to find a moment of peace within the realm he creates, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the real world and wandering freely in this dreamscape…The dream-like world functions as a source of his thinking, creative process and emotions. In his works, we can perceive the sense of loneliness, solitude and longing found in real life.
