NIGHT&DAY explores the creative and destructive forces of human life – Memory, Time, and the Self. Using darkness and light, the familiar Diego Gallery space will be transformed and artworks will be spotlighted for the viewers close examination and meditation. Featuring works by SuperMrin, Elena Dendiberia, Di Hou, and Zhengyi “Yanyan” Zhu Curated by Emily Alexander --- SFAI and the Diego Rivera Gallery present NIGHT&DAY. This exhibition spotlights a diversely talented group of international MFA artists, working across sculpture, film, textiles, and light installation. Serendipitously brought together by the Diego gallery, each artist studies the processes of life, both at the personal and collectively human level. The title of the show references the cyclical progression of day to night, light to dark, creation and destruction. This metamorphosis is displayed in the formal aspects of the show, which is dominated by a white and black palette and complimented by shadows of grey within and emanating from the work. Each artist offers a unique perspective and style, but has also worked collaboratively within the group to create an immersive experience for guests. The ceiling and skylights will be covered, altering the familiar Diego Rivera Gallery space. Spotlights will be positioned onto the each artwork to complete the dramatic transformation. Visitors are given a rare opportunity to meditate on the work outside of the traditional white cube and look closely at what is illuminated and to explore the dark corners of what is not.
