Ordinary Devotion

Tyler Wood Gallery is pleased to present Ordinary Devotion, an exhibition of new paintings by Tryn Collins. Collins’ work presents a broken autobiography, strung together painting by painting. Her black-humored tableaus of melting trophies and rough bedspreads confront the viewer with the anxiety of hindsight and the relief of ritual. Collins uses a compositional tunnel vision, zooming in to obscure context and suspend time, giving the paintings a heaviness. They have the distinct feeling of being stuck, tires spinning. This tunnel vision emphasizes the slippage of memory, our lack of control. Moments of drips and thick paint speak to the mutations, exaggerations and gaps in our memory. Collins plays with the history of still life and portraiture, flip-flopping the two, turning people into objects and objects into people. Everything is seemingly uncanny in these intimate paintings from the nun's blank stare to undulating khakis. Collins’ strategy of returning to the past is her attempt to find an equilibrium between objects and people, memory and the present.

Tryn Collins lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received an MFA from Hunter College and a BA from Brown University. She exhibited recently on TheMonthly.org and is a founding member of Underdonk, an artist-run gallery in Brooklyn, NY. For further information please contact the gallery: info@tylerwoodgallery.com
