In his most recent body of work Painted and Stitched Jonathan Parker begins by drawing simple shapes that fill a large notebook. Inspired by the drawings, he paints colors on canvas, cuts them into various shapes and arranges them onto another piece of canvas with a sewing machine. The sensibility of each finished piece speaks its own vocabulary and it is up to the viewer to reciprocate. These paintings combine the artist’s fascination and passion for sewn fabric and shape to create color, form and feeling. This is Jonathan’s third solo show with Jack Fischer Gallery. He had six solo exhibitions with the late Braunstein/Quay Gallery in San Francisco and has been included in shows throughout the U.S., including the Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle; Mary Ryan Gallery, New York; John Davis Gallery, Hudson, NY; Jan Baum Gallery, de Soto Gallery, Los Angeles; Robischon Gallery, Denver; LewAllen Contemporary, Santa Fe; San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, San Jose, CA; and the Oakland Museum, Oakland, CA. He has been awarded residencies at Yaddo; Djerassi Resident Artists Program; Atlantic Center for the Arts; Blue Mountain Center; and Headlands Center for the Arts, Affiliate Artists Program. Jonathan has also received a Fleishhacker Foundation San Francisco Bay Regional Painting Fellowship. Two of his paintings are in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum.
