Paleographic: A Selection of Bay Area Printmakers Paleographic - A Selection of Bay Area Printmakers

Paleographic presents a wide ranging survey of more than twenty contemporary Bay Area printmakers. The Artists are from diverse backgrounds, ranging in age from 20-somethings to 60-somethings, and work in all the classic hand printing techniques: woodcut, intaglio, lithography and screenprint. The Bay Area has long had a thriving printmaking community, supported by degree programs in local art colleges such as the San Francisco Art Institute and CCA, active print shops at UC Berkeley, Stanford and many other local schools, as well as independent print organizations such as the Kala Institute, The San Francisco Center for the Book, and Crown Point Press, among others. The last few years have seen an influx of many younger printmakers from other parts of California and around the country, strangely paralleling the latest high-tech boom. As printed matter disappears from its long held mass communication and commercial uses, its possibilities for fine art and as a means of personal expression become more distinct, and a new generation, which has never known a world without computer graphics, joins the veterans of the craft in the meticulous, hands-on artisanship the medium requires.
