The exhibition presents new work created during the Fellows’ studio residencies in a wide array of media and processes including site-specific mixed media installation, sculpture, performance, photography, sound and video. Each of these artists creates his/her own unique apparatus to present his/her work transforming the given space into unexpected encounters. Different components in each installation such as colors, lights, sounds, and architectural elements generate magical compositions of in/visible music. Kala Fellowships are awarded annually to nine innovative artists working in printmaking, photography, book arts, installation, video and digital media. Fellowship artists are selected from a competitive field of applicants from around the globe. Recipient artists receive a financial award and up to a six-month residency at Kala’s studio facility followed by an exhibition of their new work. These nine Fellowship artists were selected by a Kala Selection Committee with two guest jurors: Tanya Zimbardo, Assistant Curator of Media Arts at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Chris Duncan, artist and alumni of the Kala Fellowship program.

During his Kala fellowship John Davis worked on publishing a hand made box set edition celebrating expanded cinema art. The publication will include two LPs, four DVDs and a booklet and features Craig Baldwin (film) + Maggi Payne (music), Kerry Laitala (film) + Ben Bracken & Ashley Bellouin (music), Lawrence Jordan (film) + John Davis (music), Paul Clipson (film) + Tashi Wada (music). The project is entitled Gravity Spells: Bay Area New Music & Expanded Cinema Art, and culminates at the end of John’s residency period with four performance events each Saturday in July 2014 in the Kala Gallery. The performances will feature a selection of Bay Area moving image artists and musicians in conjunction with one of the pairs of artists featured in the publication release, and includes Joshua Churchill, Mary Helena Clarke, Chris Duncan, Steven Dye, Keith Evans, Jim Haynes, Anthony Iammurri, Zach Ianazzi, Marielle Jakobsons, Kent Long, Collin McKelvey, Vanessa O’Nei ll, Thad Povey, Andy Puls, Jeremy Rourke, Mark Taylor and Sweet Tooth. Schedule TBD.
