Record store / gallery Econo Jam Records will be hosting a showing of animatronic creations from the private collection of Bay Area musician and writer Cody Blanchard on Friday, August 7, 2015, as part of Oakland’s First Friday / Art Murmur art walk, starting at 7pm.
Blanchard is best known for his work as a musician in the internationally acclaimed group Shannon and the Clams, based in Oakland, CA. On August 7th, however, Blanchard will be unveiling his first solo visual art show, and the first public showing of his assemblage of strange critters. With this collection, entitled Peep Show, the artist has assembled a menagerie of curious motorized animals seemingly cobbled together from dollar store garbage and halloween clearance bin remnants, all gathered from different locales while touring the planet with Shannon and the Clams. It is rumored that the opening night will include various performance elements as part of the presentation.
Blanchard is known to have a flair for creating bizarre costumes from trash and incorporating character and performance into his other works. Cody Blanchard is currently based in Richmond, CA, but spends much of his time travelling and performing. He attended California College of the Arts in Oakland and has released nearly a dozen albums with various bands. Currently, he is working on a book of photography and a book of short stories and travel poems. Peep Show will run through Sept 7th, 2015 at Econo Jam Records in Oakland.
