Starstruck, 39x29 in., oil on linen
reconfigurator Kirstine Reiner Hansen paints abstracted figures. She composes elements of imagery from glossy advertisements and fashion magazines, samples of modernist and art historical paintings as well as her own older work in collages which work as a visual source for the paintings. The reconstruction of these fragments, pieced together, act much like words and lines in a poem, individual in their statement, but seen together having a greater meaning. The act of the interchangeably detailed and layered, unrestrained, patchy and sloppy painting process transforms the accidental to intentional, in a way charging the pieces, adding value and significance. She sees splicing and fragmenting as representative of our fast paced, media driven, low attention span culture and how we have come to experience and manage our distorted relationship to the world. Within the dizzying imagery of the semi abstract figures and portraits, parallels are drawn between contemporary advertisements and the representation/portrayal of wealth, beauty and status in art history.
