re·frac·tion [ri-frak-shuhn]
noun 1. the change in direction of a light, sound, or heat wave, passing obliquely from one medium into another.
Refraction showcases artists whose practices show an interest in bold and bright colors, complex materialities, reflective surfaces, and refractive light. Refraction is a process which re-directs waves, but acts as a challenge to faculties of perception, occasionally misleading or misdirecting us. While playing with visual perception, this exhibition aims to achieve a collaborative refraction, where viewers are directed and drawn in from piece to piece, from one medium to another, in a den of visual play. Collaborating artists include: Britt Acocelli, Nando Alvarez, Diedrick Brackens, Maria Capron, Megan Chunn, Susannah Dotson, Carlos Franco Maldanado, Lisa Jonas, Mary Ma, Nate Petterson, Megan Reed, Stephanie Rohlfs and Micah Wood. Curated by Emily Reynolds for SFiCA as part of BREAKOUT.

An epidemic has hit the Bay Area, SFiCA: BREAKOUT! 2014. The graduate students of California College of the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute have broken free from their institutional boundaries and have mutated into a hybrid machine of art and thought making. This contagion has going viral, taking over galleries across San Francisco and Oakland beginning in February 2014.
SFiCA’s curatorial committee has organized a series of exhibitions showcasing the works of current CCA and SFAI MFAs, fostering a culture of collaboration between CCA and SFAI and between the different graduate programs within both schools.
The structure of BREAKOUT is similar to a music festival with different events happening on several “stages,” including galleries and artist-run spaces throughout San Francisco and Oakland. BREAKOUT focuses in on specific areas of interest under an umbrella theme of institutional critique and collaboration between the two schools and highlights the key concerns of current art practices across the programs.
