Opening reception and performance: Thursday, May 22, 6:30 - 9:00 PM
The third juried show at the Center features the work of 18 Bay Area-based artists powerfully critiquing our unsustainable status quo, exploring our society’s relationship to production, consumption, and waste while proposing alternatives that balance valuing people and planet with financial profit.
The free opening reception will feature the debut of excerpts from Sara Kraft’s Fair // Share // Fare, her newest performance exploring the experiences of Bay Area rideshare drivers and users and several aspects of the cultural, historical, socio-economic zeitgeist represented by the rideshare industry. The piece features her signature style of “dueling narratives,” juxtaposing layers of live looping, text and video to illuminate multiple stories and viewpoints. With a knack for illuminating complex conceptual themes through intimate lenses, Kraft transports audiences with funny, heartbreaking, and provocative meditations on the human condition.
Artists include: Donna Anderson Kam, Trent Davis Bailey, Hopi Breton, Kristin Cammermeyer, Julia Goodman, Daniel Healey, Ames Kanemoto, Kathryn Kenworth, Michael Kerbow, Marie-Luise Klotz, Aviva Knox, Sara Kraft, Annie Leonard, Patrick Lydon, Scott Constable, Kate Rhoades, Barrie Rokeach, and Paul Taylor.
Jurors are:
Lawrence Rinder, Director of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive
JD Beltran, Artist and President of the San Francisco Arts Commission
Deborah Munk, Director of the Artist Residency Program at Recology San Francisco
Berit Ashla, Executive Director of the David Brower Center.
