This exhibition celebrates the prevalence of tools in our lives with art that transforms utilitarian objects into fanciful works that speak with beauty, insight, and wit. Providing a dynamic entry point into the rich themes, materials, and processes of 20th century art, Retooled profiles 28 visionary artists from the Hechinger Collection including nationally recognized artists such as Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Howard Finster, Red Grooms, Jacob Lawrence, Farnand Leger, and H.C. Westermann. Ancillary Exhibition in the Alcove Gallery Blade Runner: Retooling the Saw as Art Organized by Bedford Gallery, this invitational features 20 artists from the Greater Bay Area who use blades as a surface for painting or as 3D objects. Curriculum Connection: Explore our history and relationship with everyday tools, and learn how artists transform them into objects of beauty. Art Project: Dust off your workbenches and make tool-inspired artwork from hardware, wire, and twine.
