Juan Carlos Quintana. Reflections on Exile Part I (Entering the Forest), 2014-15; oil and acrylic on canvas; 84 x 192 in. Courtesy of the Artist and Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco.
Juan Carlos Quintanaʼs work offers a heady mixture of pessimism, humor, bright color, and impasto. His paintings are often reminiscent of Philip Guston, both in terms of the handling of paint, and the use cartoon-like characters and a rosy palette in the service of a very dark sensibility. Recent events, including having one of his paintings fall on him in his overfull studio, caused Quintana to consider the benefits of a mid-career retrospective. Initially using glass cases, each containing its own attempted retrospective, the artist decided to treat the exhibit Retrospectives as an opportunity, in his words, “to act as curator and collaborator with myself, while recognizing the absurdity of such an endeavor.”
Juan Carlos Quintana attended Tulane University in New Orleans. He was raised in Louisiana, and now lives in Oakland, CA. This is Quintanaʼs third solo exhibition at Jack Fischer Gallery. Quintana has also showed in solo exhibitions at the Oberpfaizer Kunstlerhaus II in Schwandorf, Germany; the Freies Museum in Berlin; Rice/Polak Gallery in Provincetown, MA; Pablo Gallery in the Philippines, and the SFMOMA Artist Gallery.
