Rosha Yaghmai in medias res, couch surfing and insomnia (silhouette, perfume), 2013-14, chrome, dimensions variable

Tyler Wood Gallery is pleased to present recent sculptures and drawings by Rosha Yaghmai. At a certain point in Yaghmai’s life she was in between places: staying in friends’ homes she would wake up in the middle of the night and see objects fresh. Destabilizing her intimacy with familiar, “ordinary things” that form our surroundings, identities and assumptions, Yaghmai would look for commonalities between the objects, moving them around until they work, shifting the way in which she knows and relates to the other person. The resulting works become hyper facsimiles of these “lived with” objects. Highly impenetrable and fabricated, the sculptures create silhouettes of memories of and projections onto the absent occupants. The series’ title, in medias res, is Latin for “in the midst of things.” It is a literary term that means beginning a story in the middle of an event. In this case the event refers to the artist’s life. Rosha Yaghmai has presented solo exhibitions at Thomas Solomon Gallery (LA), TAT (Berlin), and Tif's Desk (LA and Miami). Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Thomas Solomon gallery (LA), Luckman Gallery (LA), Public Fiction (LA), LACE (LA), Estacion Tijuana (Mexico), GBK (Sydney), Riverside Art Museum (LA), Transmission Gallery (Glasgow). Yaghmai received a Master of Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts in 2007 and was a Terra Foundation Fellow in 2009. In 2015 she will present solo exhibitions at Kayne Griffin Corcoran (LA) and LAX>
