This summer Royal NoneSuch Gallery, with the support of an Alternative Exposure grant, has transformed into Royal Production Company (RPC). Four artists/collaboratives have been selected to create new video works using the gallery as a site of production during a three week residency: Bonanza, Amber Cady, Carolyn Janssen and Kate Rhoades. During the residencies each artist/collaborative will have public gallery hours and a special event. The residencies will culminate in a red carpet screening on September 16th where we’ll bring the bling. After the premiere, the videos will continue to screen during regular gallery hours through early October. Fourth and last in the RPC lineup is Bonanza LLC, an artist collaborative comprised of Conrad Guevara, Lindsay Tully and Lana Williams. Their project, The Drought, is a docu-drama short film about Bay Area water issues. By combining their trademark camp aesthetics with investigative journalism, Bonanza will create a film that blurs the line between fact and fiction. As a follow up to their first film, Bonanza: The Initiation, a horror film that satirized the rise of big tech in San Francisco, The Drought will investigate the effects (real and imagined) of the water crisis. The film will feature real interviews with local water policy advocates and Bay Area residents, as well as scripted scenes filmed in or near the gallery in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland. As part of their residency Bonanza will invite the community to be part of the movie, having open hours during the filming of larger group scenes.
