Curator Dasha Matsuura will leads participants on a tour of Uptown exhibitions that explore sculptural works of art, featuring a special artist’s demonstration. This month’s tour begins with a look into Sawyer Rose’s unique metal soldering process with a demonstration and walk-through of her current solo exhibition at Classic Cars West. Both sculptural and painterly, Rose’s the soldered metal and oil paint pieces draw inspiration from the local flora of California. The graphic forms of the plants formed from molten metal stand boldly against the textured color of the panels. Using the texture of the metal as her primary mark making in conjunction with more traditional brushwork with oil, each floral form is fortified within its field. Rose’s work has evolved from sculptural panels to free-standing orbs that have also been armored in metal solder. The new seedlings of her practice are protected and tempered by the textured and beautiful metal marks reminiscent of bark and feathers. This new body of work explores Rose’s curiosity of the medium and fluctuations in the forms it can take.
