Seeing, Peeping, and Scrying

Alter Space is exited to announce our newest Peephole Gallery exhibition, Seeing, Peeping, and Scrying, an installation by Ma Li. This exhibition reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in the deliberate act of looking, both socially and privately. Through a series of light sculptures and a dance installation mimicking the format of a peepshow, Ma Li transforms the gallery space into an illuminated dreamlike world. The artist draws a parallel between scrying, a practice of looking into translucent/reflective materials for a spiritual vision, and peeping, a private act set inside a mundane and intimate environment. The work blurs the boundaries between the quotidian and the mystical by encouraging new perspectives of looking.

Ma Li, born in Fuzhou, China, is an interdisciplinary artist who formulates dreamlike worlds inspired by her Chinese heritage and experience in a collectivist society. Exploring dichotomies including hand-crafted/industrial, quotidian/fantasy, traditional/pop culture, and nature/man-made, her work generates momentary ceremonies celebrating the spiritual nature of materials and investigating the relationship between repetition and community engagement. She earned her MFA at San Francisco Art Institute and has received the Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Award, Knight Foundation Grant, and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowships. She has been a resident artist at Elsewhere Museum and Vermont Studio Center and will be an artist-in-residence at Recology San Francisco in 2015
