SMAart Gallery & Studio is pleased to present
Socially Conscious Abstraction, featuring
ceramic and mixed media sculpture by eight
California based artists. The artists in this
show have created sculptures with socially
conscious intension utilizing a sophisticated
personal visual language. These charged
abstractions reinterpret the phenomenon of
people, places, and things into a personal
language ripe with possibilities. Each artist
begins with what Twyla Tharp refers to as the
“Spine”. Their abstracted sculptures are
supported by a conceptual backbone. These
underlying conceptual foundations are what
give their work energy and audaciousness.
