Christie Marks: Spellbound, Morocco From Photos to Easel opens at Sebastopol Center for the Arts on February 12, 2016 Sonoma County artist Christie Marks, known for her intriguing mixed media artwork, presents Spellbound, Morocco From Photos to Easel at Sebastopol Center for the Arts in Gallery III. Inspired by travel in Morocco, Spellbound, Morocco From Photos to Easel features 15 mixed media works produced by Christie Marks over the last two years. Accompanying the artwork are the reference photos taken by Marks during a Fall 2013 visit to Morocco. Rather than copying these photos, Marks has used them as springboards to inspire her multi-layered paintings and collage. The Spellbound collection gives the viewer a glimpse into Morocco’s past as well as its present. The subject matter includes people, street scenes, aging architecture and more. Marks doesn’t shy away from some more difficult subject matter such as the role of women in Moroccan society and the refugee crisis gripping northern Africa. Central to Spellbound and to other artwork by Christie Marks is the intention to capture what she refers to as ‘The extraordinary in the ordinary’. Marks states that finding the extraordinary in the ordinary requires artist and viewer alike to find beauty in what is often overlooked, neglected, considered too old or marginalized in some way. To emphasize this idea Marks applies multiple layers of original drawings and paintings over recycled newspaper, butcher paper and brown paper bags. The result is artwork that is textural and captivating with a sense of mystery.
