SF State launches its new lecture series, named in memory of Art Professor Steve Wilson, with Joseph DeLappe. DeLappe will discuss Protest, Memory and Reenactment in the Post-9/11 Era.
Working with electronic and new media since 1983, DeLappe’s work in online gaming performance, sculpture and electromechanical installation have been shown throughout the U.S. and abroad. In 2006 he began the project “dead-in-iraq,” to type consecutively, all names of America’s military casualties from the war in Iraq into the Army first-person shooter online recruiting game. He also directs iraqimemorial.org, an ongoing web-based exhibition and open call for proposed memorials to the many thousands of civilian casualties from the war in Iraq. DeLappe is a professor at University of Nevada.
Wilson was a prolific new-media artist and among the first to chronicle those who successfully bridged art, science and technology. A governing board member of Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology for decades, he was widely respected for his innovative drive and intellectual curiosity. His books include Art and Science Now (Thames and Hudson, 2010) and Information Arts: Intersections of Art, Science and Technology (The MIT Press, 2003). He died in 2011 after 29 years teaching conceptual and information arts at SF State.
The new lecture series features guest artists who work at the same intersection as Professor Wilson: art, science, technology and culture. Each fall, one artist will visit SF State for a public talk and studio conversations with undergraduate and graduate students.
