Sarah Thibault, Child's pose, acrylic, tempera and oil on canvas, 2016
Residency period: June 1 - August 31, 2016
The Scrawl Center for Drawing presents Sun Salutations, a new body of work by Sarah Thibault made at the Summer Artist-In-Residency program. As a way to connect her artistic practice with Scrawl’s exhibition space, which doubles as a yoga studio, Thibault is creating a site-specific frieze made up of paintings and wall drawings, depicting a yogic sequence from child’s pose to corpse pose. Rather than following a linear narrative of a single yoga class the frieze portrays vignettes of different female characters, avatars for the artist, as they make their way through different poses in different settings and subjective states. The frieze will be displayed in multiple iterations throughout the residency, culminating in the final installation at the closing reception on August 26th.
The title of the exhibition, Sun Salutations, refers to a sequence of poses in vinyasa yoga often used at the beginning of a class to warm up the body. The names of the poses in this sequence and the language used in yoga classes often evoke a sort of hero’s journey in which the yogi’s path is paved with obstacles that he or she must overcome to reach enlightenment. This exhibition aims to both challenge and indulge in this simplistic view of yoga, and what it means to be enlightened, by embodying the gap between the metaphysical ideal and the physical and mental limitations of being human.
As part of the residency’s programing, Scrawl will host a special event on July 22nd called Drawing Breath, an evening of presentations and an interactive drawing exercise. For this event, Thibault will present wall drawings as the first layer of her frieze installation, along with a limited edition artist book called SBD that features a short story and drawings made during this residency. Artist Nicole Markoff will present a guided meditation where participants will learn to use the breath as a drawing tool, followed by a lecture on karma. She will consider misconceptions about the concept, while contextualizing it with nondual traditions that decentralize karma from the self towards a greater cosmic highway.
As the culmination of the Summer Artist-In-Residence, Scrawl will host a closing reception of Sun Salutations on August 26th, which will feature the frieze in its final stage, along with a selection of individual works made during the residency.
