Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker Susan Mogul presents and discusses her performances and performance-based videos made in the seventies and eighties that borrowed from the strategies of stand-up comedy and cabaret. Mogul’s work in this period often spoke to the financial situation of artists and the anxieties that that and the desire for recognition produces. The talk is called Comedy as a Backup. Andrea Fraser’s performance Men on the Line was originally commissioned as part of a performance series inspired by the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. A key participant in the feminist art movement on the West Coast, Mogul was a member of the Feminist Studio Workshop at the Woman’s Building, the subject of her 2010 short documentary film commissioned by Otis College of Art and Design. This event is organized by Tanya Zimbardo, assistant curator of media arts, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and is the fifth event in our year-long season about and around the work of Andrea Fraser.
