Swarm: Solo Installation Exhibition by Joomi Chung & A Collection Debut of Works by Jose Di Gregor

SACRAMENTO, CA (March 21th, 2015)—EN EM Art Space is pleased to present, SWARM, a solo exhibition of installation work by international artist Joomi Chung in the main gallery space. In addition, EN EM will debut a new collection of works by Sacramento artist Jose Di Gregorio in its Project Space. Please join us on Saturday, April 11th, 6:00 – 9:00 pm for the opening reception and to meet the artists. Solo Exhibition by Joomi Chung The Swarm installation is a massive vein-like structure made of contours and intervals that continuously grow and morph through a dense accumulation of segments. For Chung, the core idea of the project evolved around ”reflection and exploration of the idea of image-space, a visual field and a bodily space, a place to be seen and inhabited.” All the while, “abstracting ideas and sensations into a gradually expanding web of lines.” In this installation, Chung’s hands have manually woven and coated the steel wires, carefully adapting the work to its given environment. The outcome is a floating mass, organic and phenomenal with varying degrees of density, porosity and simplicity. Joomi Chung was born in South Korea and grew up in Argentina. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2004) and is currently an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Her work has been exhibited in national and international venues such as Seoul Art Center Hangaram Museum in Seoul, South Korea; Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO; Herter Gallery at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA; Ohio State University Urban Arts Space; Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids, MI; Manifest Creative Research and Drawing Center in Cincinnati, OH; Artspace in Raleigh, NC; Institute of Art and Design at the University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, Czech Republic; SÍM Gallery in Reykjavik, Iceland; and the Carnegie Center for Visual and Performing Arts, Covington, KY. Collection Debut by Jose Di Gregorio in EN EM’s Project Room In contrast to the colorless and organic web of ideas beholden to Chung’s work, Jose Di Gregorio’s new work incorporates color and obsessive symmetry to engage its viewer and explore graphic and optical depths. Di Gregorio expresses his focus of the work as “combinations of intricate patterned lines, saturated color gradients, and celestial landscapes. The line-weight in the drawings mainly stays the same, yet the renderings create depth and form, done with overlaps and repetition.” In his debut at EN EM Art Space, he intuitively introduces color palette, blending and blurring in vivid juxtaposition to his precise line work, bringing the optical effects to another level. Sacramento Artist, Jose Di Gregorio was born in Puerto Rico, studied painting in Pont-Aven, France, and holds a BFA from the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, Indiana. EN EM Art Space is open Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00 pm – 7:00pm, and by appointment on weekdays.
