Royal NoneSuch Gallery is pleased to present Tapping the Mirror, an exhibition of new works by Brynda Glazier and Courtney Johnson. While Glazier is predominantly a sculptor and Johnson a painter, the exhibition features a collaborative video project created using footage from movies, television, music videos, and other pop culture artifacts. Using a process that was both responsive and additive, clips from films such as Robert Altman’s 3 Women (1977) and Mel Brook’s High Anxiety, (1977) were paired with more abstract, slowed-down and often kaleidoscopic images. Edited together with a focus on humor, garbled communication, and practical effects, the viewing experience is one of overlap and dissonance. Also included in the exhibition are Glazier and Johnson's individual works that build on a similar psycho-social energy contained in the video piece. Often pulling from the same source-material, the work considers façades and textures represented in 2D and 3D form. Both artists engage in the creation of a surreal narrative that functions halfway between the familiar and hallucination.
