The Daily Fabric Susan Sharman, Honey, 2016, Fabric, thread, beads, 16x20

The Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Art Gallery at the Benicia Public Library is proud to present the exhibition “The Daily Fabric”, textile collages by Susan Sharman. Inspired by embroidered samplers, the artist uses the medium of fabric and thread to create a bridge with her past. Drawn to the antique linens and doilies with their handcrafted elements the artist “draws” with needle and thread, incorporating her own imagery with the existing craftwork. The mixed media collages incorporate old photographs/found ephemera, drawings and digital imagery. Says Susan, “I am interested in the stories inherent in the items themselves but will allow room for the narrative to suggest its own direction.” Historically, embroidered samplers were used to tell stories, or to record an important event. Susan has appropriated the medium as a means for personal exploration and as a way to record the daily fabric of her own life.  Sharman is a graduate of CCA in Oakland, California and has been working in the medium of fabric and thread since 1999. She has worked as a freelance graphic designer and gallery manager. Her artwork is influenced by her voracious reading habit, daily walks in nature and old lace and doilies. Additional work can be seen on Sharman’s website at: http://www.susansharmanfineart.com ##
