The Speed of Light

Opening Reception: Feb. 12th, 6:30-9:30pm

The David Brower Center’s first show of 2015 features the work of photographers Lisa K. Blatt and Christina Seely. Their artworks explore the impacts of human civilization through two elements so essential to our existence that we often overlook their importance: light and time. Through beautiful, often spare images, taken from all over the world, audiences are invited to consider the artificial light of cities and the energy required to produce it, the effects of climate change on natural rhythms, and human society’s increasingly delicate balance with the environment.

The launch of the exhibition will include a free public reception in the Hazel Wolf Gallery and Draw of Darkness, a lecture and visual/text-based performance by artist Christina Seely in the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Theater.

In Draw of Darkness, Seely and the audience will explore her multi-layered project Markers of Time, which uses photographic media, text based pieces, performance, and collaborative works to consider how time is measured and experienced within our complex and ever-changing relationship to systems of the planet. Experienced as part of this rare event, Seely’s works culled from expeditionary travels to the Arctic and tropics promise to stimulate new understandings of time and place, science and art history, geologic and man-made time, and the ways in which climate change is altering seemingly fixed natural cycles.
