The Trees: Bryan, Vita, and Rhiannon Hewitt

Opening reception: Friday, April 25th, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. (The reception is outside; please dress accordingly.)

The Trees. The trees are watching me and I am watching the trees. So come to tea, my cat, my dear!

Though she is not quite 3 years old, Rhiannon Hewitt has a habit of sharing utterances that are strange, amusing and sometimes spiritually insightful. As her parents, we work with her to realize some of these in the form of photographs and mixed-media pieces because we see them as important reminders to look more closely. This particular piece is intended to serve as a bridge between the worldview of two adults who sometimes think they understand what life is and does and the mystery and wonder that comes from recent acquaintance with the same. It is a way of honoring the beauty of uncertainty and the whimsy of childhood without forgetting the importance of darkness.

Bryan and Vita Hewitt are interdisciplinary artists who frequently collaborate with each other and others because they believe that many voices are often more powerful together than one could be alone. Previous exhibitions have taken place of their performance, installation, video, sculpture and/or photography work in locations as diverse as a stainless steel bathroom, Justin Herman Plaza, SOMARTS Cultural Center, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Rhiannon Hewitt has a background in free-form dancing, hopping and general mayhem. She has collaborated with her parents on several performances and photographic works, and is currently working with them and illustrator Annmarie Geniusz on a children's book.
