Trade Beads: Solo exhbition by TechShop A.I.R. Constantine Zlatev "Octagraphs" (2016) by Constantine Zlatev

TechShop Gallery-SF will open a unique solo exhibition on Oct 20, 2016 (6-9pm), titled Trade Beads, featuring its current Artist-in-Residence, Constantine Zlatev. Trade Beads, showcasing several new works by Zlatev, is a reflection on the historical significance and use of trade beads as a powerful currency & tool in the African slave trade and colonization, between the 16th & 20th century. The works on show draw a striking parallel with the global arms trade in contemporary history as a similar means of influence over present-day developing nations. “I am particularly inspired by projects grounded in ideas of social, political, cultural or historical significance - we live in a time where conceptual art should aspire to no less," says Zlatev. Constantine Zlatev is a sculptor and designer, utilizing disabled armaments & industrial materials to make aesthetically refined & conceptually-driven sculptures and installations. He is a recipient of the prestigious international Arte Laguna Prize for Sculpture & Installation in Venice, Italy and he exhibits regularly in group & solo shows across the U.S. as well as Europe.
