Lauren Jade Szabo has been painting in oil for twenty years. She has exhibited as far away as Italy and South Africa as well as across her home state of California. Three years ago, after graduating from California College of the Arts, she began a body of work focusing on painting from the live model. Szabo’s solo exhibition and limited edition book Unabashed features a collection of portraits created over the past 2 years. Each oil painting was created from the live model in 4 hours or less at Arte Verissima Studio without the aid of photographic reference.
Unabashed celebrates the relationships between artist and model. The paintings express the vulnerability, tenacity, and bravery that are necessary to be an artist and an art model. Szabo believes in working from life because “the camera sees differently than I see. The decisions would be different, therefore the end result would be a different painting.” She enjoys painting living, breathing subjects that she can study, engage and interact with. Painting from life demands a sense of urgency and spontaneity, and the ability to make decisions quickly. The finished piece is a sum of many factors --- how the artist and model felt that day, their mood, health, preoccupation, and their ability to be present and creative. Szabo's subjects include Bay Area models, her friends, and herself. Her figures are all featured on white backgrounds. Though she enjoys painting the nude, some of her favorite subjects are in costume. Motivated by the unique character of her subject and light, Szabo's intention is to capture her experience of a person.
